マレーシア出身でニュージーランドのオークラインド大学に通う現役の大学生エ・ヴェン・ソーの作品は、写真やイラストを巧みな画像処理のテクニックで加工したグラフィックアート。奇抜とも言える彼の創りだす作品は、カジュアルとエレガントさが上手に織り混じり、欧米のアーティスト達に大きな影響を受けつつも独特のオリジナリティを生み出している。

[SOPHISTRY]　あなた自身についてまずは簡単な自己紹介をお願いします。

[EE VENN SOH]　こんにちは、私はエ・ヴェン・ソーといいます。マレーシア出身です。僕のクリエティブ・アイデンティティーはEIII。完全な独学で、今は独立して活動しているけど、本当はただ単に自分が得意なことをしているだけなんだ。現在はオークランド大学でコンピューターサイエンスを習得中。国際交換留学プログラムでシンガポールにある南洋理工大学に留学中。画像処理とコンピュータグラフィックを学習予定。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please briefly introduce yourself.

[EE VENN SOH]　I am the person behind the creative identity of EIII. I work completely on my own, without any formal trainings. But it just happens to be something that I am good at. Currently I am studying computer science in University of Auckland, New Zealand. Now, I am under an international student exchange program with Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. I will be focusing on image processing and computer graphics in later stages.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品について教えてください。

[EE VENN SOH]　僕の作品は、カラーバランスに図形、3次元投影、デッサン、エアーブラシに処理画像をとにかく組み合わせたものが多い。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us about your work.

[EE VENN SOH]　My works are a saturated mixed media of colours balance, shapes, 3D perspective, drawings, airbrushing and photo manipulation. The candour and openness in designs with regards to my life as a whole have made me someone who truly appreciates arts today.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品のインスピレーションはどこから生まれてくるのですか？

[EE VENN SOH]　実は僕はアートやデザインの学校には行ったことがないんだ。やったことと言えば夜な夜ないろいろとパソコンに向かっていろいろ試行錯誤したことやチュートリアルなどがトレーニングになったのかな。変化のない繰り返しばかりのつまらない作品に陥らない様に心がけてるてる。アメリカやイギリス、ヨーロッパなどの国際的な活動には積極的に参加して、世界最先端のクリエティブスを肌で感じるんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Where do you get your inspiration from?

[EE VENN SOH]　I have never been to an art or design school. The only training would be the late night experiments and tutorials. To prevent myself to be a victim in the inundated repetition with all the brimming of uninspired works. I participate actively in the international art scene mostly those in the US, UK and European countries while keeping a close watch on the market leading inspiring creatives.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたが今最も興味を持っていることを教えてください。

[EE VENN SOH]　最近は、ファンキーとも言えるレトロな画像に近未来的な要素を融合させることにはまってる。他にもプログラムをデザインに取り入れることにも凝ってるかな。違う画像コードやサウンド、ユーザーアクション入力など取り入れたバリエーションのある画像の製作などにも興味があるよ。

[SOPHISTRY]　What are you most interested in now?

[EE VENN SOH]　Currently I am interested in mixing futuristic arts elements with retro old school funky graphics. I am also keen of trying to blend programming with designing. Using different graphic codes, sounds, user actions inputs to create various variation of images.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたのクリーエーターとしての今後のビジョンを教えてください。

[EE VENN SOH]　僕らの未来は無限であるということ。僕らが探求するべき空はどこまでも高く地平線はどこまでも続いている。自分が行った多数のマーケティング戦略と市場観測から考えて、マーケットやそこにいる人たちはプログラムとデザインを一つに融合した世界へ変移していってると思う。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us what your vision is as an artist for the future?

[EE VENN SOH]　The future bears no limit. The sky is up high and the horizon is wide apart for us to explore and see. Based on my swarm marketing strategy and observation. It is clear that the market and the people are shifting to a world that will mix programming and designing as a whole.

[SOPHISTRY]　どのような作業環境で作品を作られているのですか。

[EE VENN SOH]　僕は重い雲に覆われた暗くて寒い日に音楽を聴いたり、たまに訪れる人と話をしたり、アイスキャラメルを飲みながら仕事するのが好きだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　When you make your work, what kind of work environment are you in?

[EE VENN SOH]　I enjoy working in a cold and dark raining day with music, passer-by and a cup of ice-blended caramel.

[SOPHISTRY]　これまでに影響を受けたものや人について教えてください。

[EE VENN SOH]　今まで本当に沢山の人たちと出会ってきた。それぞれ個性があって違った考えや見識に触れて今日の僕があるんだ。特にアメリカ、イギリス、ヨーロッパからのアーティストに大きく影響を受けていると思う。謝辞したいアーティストには、ピート・ハリソン（Pete Harrison）、マイク・ハリソン（ Mike Harrison）、ピーター・ヤヲロスキー（ Peter Jaworoski）、パウエル・ノルバート（ Pawel Nolbert）ロナルド・アッシュバーン（ Ronald Ashburn）チャック・アンダーソン（ Chuck Anderson）セオ・ジェニッセイキス（ Theo Gennitsakis）など。他にも多数いる。

[SOPHISTRY]　Do you have any role models that have inspired you or influenced your works?

[EE VENN SOH]　There were many people that came and passed by my life. Each, differently instill different thoughts and insights for me that contribute to what I have today. I am greatly inspired by artists from the US, UK and European Countries. There are few names that I would like to mention. Pete Harrison, Mike Harrison, Peter Jaworoski, Pawel Nolbert, Ronald Ashburn, Chuck Anderson, Theo Gennitsakis and many more.

[SOPHISTRY]　その他、何かメッセージなどがあれば教えてください。

[EE VENN SOH]　もしデザイナーなら、自分の仕事に誇りを持つことだ。情熱を傾け想像力を育てるんだ。業界の基準となるべくスタイルやトレンドを確立するんだ。真っ白なキャンバスから始めることに楽しさを感じ、そこに想像力を解き放つんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us if there is a message you would like to convey.

[EE VENN SOH]　If you a designer, love what you are doing right now. Keep your passion and nurture your thoughts. Be the one that create industry standards and style trends. Have fun with empty canvas and let your imaginary flows.
