JOHN CASEY

発想とはどこから生まれてくるのだろう。John Caseyの作品をグロテスクに感じる人も少なくはないだろう。それはある種どこかに麻薬的な要素が含まれているからだろうか。一度見ると脳裏に焼き付いてしまう。そんな魅力が彼の作品には潜んでいる。

[SOPHISTRY]　あなた自身についてまずは簡単な自己紹介をお願いします。

[JOHN CASEY]　私の名前はジョン・ケイシーといいます。マサチューセッツ州ボストン出身の44歳で、今はカルフォルニアのオークランドに住んでいる。愛らしい妻とおばあさん猫のモンティと住んでいるんだ。そして僕の仕事は｢アート｣を作ること。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please briefly introduce yourself.

[JOHN CASEY]　My name is John Casey. I am a 44 year old artist originally from Boston, Massachusetts now living in Oakland, California. I live with my lovely wife Mary and my gnarly old cat Monty. I make art.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品について教えてください。

[JOHN CASEY]　学校ではペインティングで学位を取得。しばらくして彫像を造り始めた。最近またその傍ら絵を描き始めた。僕のほとんどの仕事は寓意的で描かれている肖像のほとんどがある意味「歪められている」。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us about your work.

[JOHN CASEY]　I graduated art school with a degree in painting. Over time I began to make sculpture. Recently I began drawing again as well as doing sculpture. Most of my work is figurative and most of my figures are distorted to some degree.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品のインスピレーションはどこから生まれてくるのですか？

[JOHN CASEY]　サイエンスやフィクション、動物、植物、俗に言う自然、政治、人の体、建物などほとんど何でもからインスピレーションを感じる。あと、一風変わった映画、例えばCronenbergの“Naked Lunch”とか、Julie Taymorの”Titus”、TomTykwerの“Run Lola Run”、Aranofskyの”Pi”と“Requiem for a Dream”、SvankmeyerやBrothers Quayアニメーションも好きだ。アニメと言えば”Akira”とか“Spritied Away（千と千尋の神隠し）”には感銘したよ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Where do you get your inspiration from?

[JOHN CASEY]　All kinds of things. science fiction, animals, plants and nature in general, politics, the human body, and architecture. Arty, weird movies like Cronenberg’s “Naked Lunch”, Julie Taymor’s “Titus”, Tom Tykwer’s “Run Lola Run”, Aranofsky’s “Pi” and “Requiem for a Dream”, and Svankmeyer or Brothers Quay animation. Anime like “Akira” or “Spirited Away” are also quite inspiring.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたが今最も興味を持っていることを教えてください。

[JOHN CASEY]　僕は空想的な人体形態に憑りつかれていて、彫像やインク描画など自分の作品の中にそんな形態を模索しまう。好きなシナリオとしては、もし自分の体の一部分がその時の感情によって歪んでしまうようなことになったら、どんなだろう？とか、もし人体が妙に巨大で「カニ」みたいだったら？、頭が体から離れて浮いていて自分の意思で動かすことが出来なかったら？とか考えてしまう。

[SOPHISTRY]　What are you most interested in now?

[JOHN CASEY]　I am obsessed with fictitious human morphology, which I explore in my sculptures and ink drawings. My theory is if one could distort one’s body based on one’s emotion or psychological state, what would that look like? What if the body formed strange huge club-like limbs or a floating head on it’s own, without the control of the owner?

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたのクリーエーターとしての今後のビジョンを教えてください。

[JOHN CASEY]　大きな彫像を創作したいな。もっと総体的にスケールの大きな仕事をしたいんだ。僕は、ただ｢アート｣を作れればそれだけでいい。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us what your vision is as an artist for the future?

[JOHN CASEY]　I’d like to make large scale sculpture and more installations, an overall increase in scale. I’d be happy to just be making art of any kind in the future.

[SOPHISTRY]　どのような作業環境で作品を作られているのですか。

[JOHN CASEY]　僕のスタジオは、簡素でいたってシンプルなんだ。壁の一面は、自分の作品を他のアーティストと交換したアートで埋め尽くされていているんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　When you make your work, what kind of work environment are you in?

[JOHN CASEY]　My studio is fairly clean and minimal. I have a wall covered with art I have traded with other artists. I usually have music playing. I have two tables, one for sculpture, one for drawing.

[SOPHISTRY]　これまでに影響を受けたものや人について教えてください。

[JOHN CASEY]　思いつくアーティストと言えば、Henry Dargerや Goya、Patricia Paccinini、 Honoré Daumier、 Otto Dix、 Francis Bacon、 Leon Golub、 Kiki Smith、 Anselm Keifer、Paul Klee、Philip Gustonなどの作品が気に入っている。

[SOPHISTRY]　Do you have any role models that have inspired you or influenced your works?

[JOHN CASEY]　Some of my favorite artists, off the top of my head, are Henry Darger, Goya, Patricia Paccinini, Honoré Daumier, Otto Dix, Francis Bacon, Leon Golub, Kiki Smith, Anselm Keifer, Paul Klee, and Philip Guston.

[SOPHISTRY]　その他、何かメッセージなどがあれば教えてください。

[JOHN CASEY]　僕の作品には特別なメッセージはないんだ。僕の作品の物語はいたってオープンで、そのキャラクターで興味を得ずにいられないような作品であれば、見た人はそこから自分でメッセージや物語を見出してくれればいいんだ。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us if there is a message you would like to convey.

[JOHN CASEY]　In my art, no specific message. My narratives are usually pretty open. As long as my work is compelling and the characters are interesting, my hope is that viewers will apply their own message or story.
