サンパウロ在住のイラストレーターAnna Anjosは、幻想的でクリエイティブな彼女独自の世界観を表現しているユニークな作家である。現在はイラストレーターとしての枠を超え、iPod やiPhones、その他の携帯やラップトップをカスタマイズできるオリジナルデザインのスキンをリリースするなど、活動の範囲をさらに広げている。

[SOPHISTRY]　あなた自身についてまずは簡単な自己紹介をお願いします。

[ANNA ANJOS]　私の名前はAnna Anjosです。ブラジル出身で23歳です。サンパウロに住むイラストレータ、グラフィックデザイナーです。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please briefly introduce yourself.

[ANNA ANJOS]　My name is Anna Anjos, I am Brazilian and I am 23 years old. I’m an illustrator and graphic designer who live in São Paulo (Brazil).

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品について教えてください。

[ANNA ANJOS]　サンパウロにある Belas Artesのグラフィックデザイン科課程を卒業し、独学でイラストレータになる。母の本の挿絵を描いたことをきっかけに10歳からイラストレーションを始め、それ以来病みつきになりFábrica de QuadrinhosやHiperquímicaのカラリストやグラフィックデザイナーとして働き、ブラジルにあるいくつかの広告会社で活動中。 Latino-americano de Publicidade　(El Ojo de Iberoamerica) に出展されたあるグラフィックデザインの製作に参加や、Jam Session HQMIXプロジェクトでは他のアーティストと共同でコミック「O Crime do Teishouko Preto」を製作。最近ではiPod やiPhones、その他の携帯やラップトップをカスタマイズできるオリジナルデザインのスキンをリリースする機会に恵まれる。さらにハンドペインティングを施したオールスターの靴はウェブサイトから購入可能。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us about your work.

[ANNA ANJOS]　I am graduated in Graphic Design from Belas Artes (São Paulo) and a self-learner illustrator. I have started to work with illustration since I was 10 years old, when I had the opportunity to create the internal illustrations for my mother’s book. Since then, I didn’t stop anymore; I’ve worked as colorist and graphic designer for Fábrica de Quadrinhos and Hiperquímica, acting amongst several Brazilian advertisement agencies. I also took part on the creation of the graphic project to the Festival Latino-americano de Publicidade (the “El Ojo de Iberoamerica”), and the project Jam Session HQMIX developing with other artists the Comics named “O Crime do Teishouko Preto”. Recently I had the opportunity to release my exclusive line of Skins (stickers for iPods, iPhones, mobiles and laptops). Furthermore, I develop hand-made All Stars which can be acquired from my website.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたの作品のインスピレーションはどこから生まれてくるのですか？

[ANNA ANJOS]　自分の感性に触れるものからは何でも。最終的にはどんな形であれ影響を受けていると思う。それがいい音楽であったり、見たクレイジーな夢であったり、いい本であったりと様々。最新スタイルを知りたいから他のアーティストやグラフィックデザイナーの作品を見て頭の中にあるファイルを常に最新の状態を保つように心がけてるいるかな。

[SOPHISTRY]　Where do you get your inspiration from?

[ANNA ANJOS]　All that emotionally touches me, in some way, ends inspiring me. It can be a good music or some crazy dream that I have had, or even a good book that I have read. I also try to update my “head files” searching for portfolios of another illustrators and graphic designers for references and to get to know new styles.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたが今最も興味を持っていることを教えてください。

[ANNA ANJOS]　いかにアーティストとして向上できるかにいつも関心がある。完璧主義だから、制作するとき細部にまでこだわることを助けていると思う。オーディオヴィジュアルメディアに強く関心があり始めてみたい。テレビに使われるのヴィネットや2Dアニメーションの音楽ビデオクリップを作ってみたい。

[SOPHISTRY]　What are you most interested in now?

[ANNA ANJOS]　I am always interested in improve myself artistically. I am a perfectionist and I think that it ends helping me in the refining process of each illustration that I create. I have a major interest in start developing works on the audio-visual media field, mainly vignettes for television and music videoclips with 2D animation.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたのクリーエーターとしての今後のビジョンを教えてください。

[ANNA ANJOS]　世の中にはたくさんの人たちがすばらしい作品を制作していると思う。幸運にもアートはもう美術館だけのものではなくなり、誰もがもっと楽しめる時代になった。インターネットの登場により、アートがより民主的になったことは疑う余地もなくすばらしいことだと思う。技術的な面で考えると、最近簡単に手に入るようになった高性能な画像処理ソフトウェアにより、レイヤーやテクスチャ、数え切れないほどのデジタルエフェクトを重ねてデジタル画像を使ったすばらしい作品を制作することが可能になったとは言え、作品の中にある要諦を感じ取ることが必要であると思う。いいイラストレーションは、作品にテクニックによって自分らしさを与えることだと思う。至る所でどこかで見たことあるような作品をよく見かける。そこに未来への大いなる挑戦があるのかもしれない。テレビや、特にインターネットでは世界中のアーティストの作品がクリックするだけで見られるようになり、常に情報や作品にさらされているところで独自のスタイルや自分らしい考え方を確立させることがより重要になってきた。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us what your vision is as an artist for the future?

[ANNA ANJOS]　I think that there’s a lot of good people making works that besides original, are excellent. Fortunately, art stopped being restricted to museums and other institutions and became more accessible to almost any kind of public. And with the arrival of the internet, art has become democratized and this is unquestionable fantastic. In terms of technique, due to the access possibility to great image edition softwares, it is possible to develop a wonderful digital work, applying many layers and textures and millions of effects. However, I think that it’s also necessary to take in appreciation the essence of the work. A good illustration is the addition of your content associated to the technique. There’s a lot of works thereabout which shows a lot of the same of what we are used to see. Maybe the great challenge for the future is there: achieve your own style, your own way of thinking in a world where we are constantly bombarded by information and works that become increasingly interesting on tv and mainly internet where we can find millions of artist portfolios from all over the world in just a click on your mouse.

[SOPHISTRY]　あなたが作品を通じて伝えたいメッセージなどがあれば教えてください。

[ANNA ANJOS]　自分のやっていることが本当に好きだから、製作には献身的に取り組む。これが作品ある程度反映されているいると思う。希望こそが、自分の作品を探求する主な感情なんだと思う。あらゆることを可能にする最新技術と通信技術がありながらも、まだまだ私たちにはいつでも自由に使える高度に発達したリソースにあふれている。にも関わらず今の私たちは心はいつも悲しくここで何かを変える必要性があるように感じる。たった一枚の画像でも千の言葉に匹敵する。世界を変えようなどと思ってはいないけど、ビジュアル・コミュニケーションに携わるものとして作品を通じてこの混乱と不信の世界に何か楽しいメッセージを送る義務が私にはあるんだと思う。

[SOPHISTRY]　Tell us if there is a message you would like to express about your work.

[ANNA ANJOS]　I perform my job with a lot of devotion, I am truly in love for what I do and I think that in some way, it ends reflecting into my works. I try to bring hope, I think this is the main feeling that I which to explore in my illustrations. Even with the advanced technology and the power of communication that it makes possible, still we have all the highly advanced resources at our disposal anytime, I feel that nowadays the world is sad inside and it needs to re-ordinate several points. I think that an image can indeed represent more than a thousand words. I do not have the pretension to change the world but I think that because I work with visual communication I have the duty to try bringing some more optimistic message through my work to a chaotic and unbeliever world.

[SOPHISTRY]　どのような作業環境で作品を作られているのですか。

[ANNA ANJOS]　自宅にスタジオを作ったの。これがフリーで仕事する利点の一つ。自分のリズムで何をするにもベストと思う時間を仕事に割り当て自分で管理するできるようにしておきたい。仕事をするときはいつも音楽を聞いていて、創作意欲を与えてくれる。音楽は作っている作品に合わせるようにしてる。例えば子供の絵本を描いているときは、「ピュア」なスタイルの音楽を聞くけど、もっと複雑な感情表現を必要とする仕事の場合は、もっと成熟した感情表現を醸し出したブラジル人歌手の音楽を聴くの。例えばNação Zumbi とかLenineが流れるようないい感じなの。

[SOPHISTRY]　When you make your work, what kind of work environment are you in?

[ANNA ANJOS]　I have adapted my own studio in my house. The advantage of being a freelancer is that you can work at home. You create your own work rhythm and have the possibility to administrate your time the way you think it’s best for you. I’m always listening to music while I work, it stimulates me to create. Usually, I try to match the musical style according to the work I’m doing. For example, if it’s a children’s book, I use to listen to musical groups that have a certain “pure” style; if it’s a work which demands a more complex line of thought, I listen to certain Brazilian singers which have on their works a more mature line of thought, like Nação Zumbi and Lenine, for example. I think that it flows very good this way.

[SOPHISTRY]　これまでに影響を受けたものや人について教えてください。

[ANNA ANJOS]　いいえ。でも自分はとても好奇心が強くいつも他の作品から学んで、映像的な経験を積むようにしているから、やっぱり影響は直接受けているかも。過去に経験したことが、今の自分や考え方に反映していることは確かだと思う。他の流れと一緒にされるのは好きではないけど、あまり心配はしていない。気になることは自分がいい作品を作っているかどうか、それぞれの作品の芸術的な質感があるのか、技術的な基礎に乗っ取っているかどうか、構成としてのエッセンスになっているかどうかだと思う。

[SOPHISTRY]　Do you have any role models that have inspired you or influenced your works?

[ANNA ANJOS]　No. Maybe due to the fact that I am very curious and are always searching for other portfolios to learn and acquire visual experience, this maybe had directly influenced my work because after all, I think that we are the way we are and think the way we think due to our past experiences. But I don’t like to include me on any artistic movement, I don’t worry about that. I do worry if I am developing a good work, with an artistic quality on each illustration, based on technical points, as much for the essence of each composition.

[SOPHISTRY]　今後、どのようなジャンルの作品を作っていきたいとお考えですか。

[ANNA ANJOS]　イラストレーションやペインティングを超えた芸術的路線を突き進んで行けたらと思ってる。あと遠い未来でもいいから本を出版してみたい。昔からやってみたいと思ってたんだけどまだ十分に準備できてない。それでもやはり描くことを忘れてしまうことは想像できない。イラストレーションだけは決してやめることはないと思う。

[SOPHISTRY]　What kind of art genre work are you looking at doing in future?

[ANNA ANJOS]　I have the desire to follow another artistic path beyond illustration/painting. I still want, on a distant future, to write a book. I have always wanted to do that, however, I feel I am not prepared enough yet. Nevertheless, despite that, I can’t imagine myself away from my drawing materials; illustration will be something I will never stop doing.

[SOPHISTRY]　今後、どのようなジャンルの作品を作っていきたいとお考えですか。

[ANNA ANJOS]　アニメーションの仕事をしてみたいと思ってる。2Dから始めてみるつもりだけど、例えばそれが自分のやってみたいオーディオヴィジュアル3Dの仕事にどのように適用できるか知りたい。アニメーションは自分が進みたい方向の一つであって、それでも従来のイラストレーションはやめられないだろうな（インクペンに昔ながらの紙を使うこと）。

[SOPHISTRY]　Tell us about your new ideas or projects for the future.

[ANNA ANJOS]　I still want to work with animation. Firstly, I want to start with 2D and explore a lot of that area. But I also have a lot of will to know how it would be the application of my work on an audio-visual 3D, for example. Animation is one of the paths I still intend to follow in the future. However, I think I’ll never be able to get rid of the traditional illustration (drawing ink pen and the good old sheet of paper).

[SOPHISTRY]　その他、何かメッセージなどがあれば教えてください。

[ANNA ANJOS]　他の人が自分のことをどう思うかなんて気にしてはだめだと思う。ただ自分らしくいればいい。自分を信じて、自分より上や下の人などいないから常に謙虚でいること。やりたいことがあったらあきらめないで、自分の夢を追う。時間は一秒ごとに短く感じられるようになるから、目的意識とユーモアを持って、誰もが遭遇する人生の逆境に立ち向かおう。

[SOPHISTRY]　Please tell us if there is a message you would like to convey.

[ANNA ANJOS]　Don’t bother on what people think about you. Just be…you. Believe in yourself but always be humble because nobody is or will be worst or better than you. Never give up on what you really want and go after your dream: time gets short each second. Be determined and have good humor to face the adversities which will come.
